What was the Louisiana Purchase? Why was it ironic for Thomas Jefferson to go through with it? How did he justify making the Louisiana Purchase?

The Louisiana Purchase was the 1803 imperial rights purchase of the Mississippi River basin’s western half by the United States from France. With a total price of $27,267,622, the deal enabled the U.S. government to gain sole authority over indigenous inhabitants’ lands either by conquest or by contract. The purchase was and remained the greatest land bargain in the entire U.S. history.

It was ironic for Thomas Jefferson to go through with the purchase since the president overstepped the authority granted by the constitution in buying the land. Jefferson was a known strict interpreter of the constitution, and going against it raised a lot of questions than answers. However, the purchase was justified since it presented an opportunity for the government to make treaties. The benefit of the treaties was that they enabled the government to be in charge of making its own rules and, further, Louisiana full control of New Orleans.
