What was the general attitude of the working-class masses to the American Revolutionary war? How were white males from the masses convinced to fight in the war?

The working-class masses were outraged by the actions of the British, but the general enthusiasm for the American Revolutionary war was not significant, and the interest in independence was not apparent. White males from the masses were convinced to fight in the war by promises to rise in rank, make some money, and change social status.

It has been the traditional technique by which those in charge of any social order mobilize a rebellious population. They offer adventure and military service rewards to encourage poor people to fight for a cause they cannot see as their own. City mechanics, workers, sailors, small farmers, and tenants were drawn into the war by the rhetoric of the Revolution, the comradely spirit of military service, and some land distribution.
