In today’s environment, there is an ongoing debate surrounding the concept of free higher education. From one perspective, such an approach can make colleges and universities affordable for talented people in need. On the other hand, there may be serious implications of free higher education. In terms of its impact on students’ experiences, it appears difficult to state a universal tendency, as it strongly depends on the individual learner’s inner motivation. According to Adrogue, the past attempts at making colleges free led to an increased enrollment.

However, the retention rates soon reached record low levels, as many students exploited the accessibility of no-charge opportunities without a strong motivation. In other words, free education often attracts uninterested students who do not actually need a degree. The resources of the system become dispersed across a greater number learners, which leaves motivated students without due attention. As a result, pass rates and efficiency of the educational process tends to decrease.
