“The Committee of Union and Progress” refers to the political organization of the Turkish bourgeois revolutionaries and army officers. It is also often associated with the Young Turk revolt in 1908. The organization marked itself in the form of a secret committee that acted against the oppressive regime and autocratic governance of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The term is associated with the process of changing the Ottoman state by the Young Turks, whose goals led to unexpected consequences, and unfavorable outcomes, such as the undermining of the committee and society’s trust.

The historical period of the formation and development of the committee dates back to the end of the 19th century, from 1880 to 1920. The organization was founded in 1889, and, as a result of the Young Turk Revolution and the overthrow of Abdul Hamid II, this committee came to power and acted as a political party. “The Committee of Union and Progress” made radical attempts to modernize the state apparatus, the army, the education system, and the judiciary. However, the low efficiency of the reforms and the inability of its leaders to ensure the implementation of the foreign policy course led to the fall of the party’s authority in 1912.

Undoubtedly, the organization’s activities were marked by variable successes and not always outstanding achievements.
The committee’s historical significance consists of revolutionary ideas regarding the end of injustice due to the monarchical government and constitutional democracy. Thanks to this “movement,” in 1908, the constitution of the Ottoman Empire was restored with the addition of new ideas and models. The committee members laid the people’s faith in a better future and progress; they deliberately went to their goals, adapting to certain events and phenomena.
