An assessment is proclaimed authentic after satisfying at least two major requirements. First, the test represents performance in a real-world setting. For example, students are expected to write something that communicates to a real person. Second, the performance standards are communicated to the student. In other words, the answers to the test are known, unlike in conventional exams wherein the answers to the test are only known to the teachers or instructors. Assessments are made based on real performance and real people. As a result, the outcomes of the said assessments are also known as “authentic artifacts.” Examples of “authentic artifacts” are the completed posters or videos made to document the performance of a particular task.
