In Picasso’s painting, the women are humble workers of a common brothel. Because of this, these women would have had anywhere from 16 to 23 partners per evening and would find their clients from all walks of life who had the money to pay for their services. In Manet’s painting, the woman is a high-paid courtesan who would limit her services to individuals of a higher class that would pay a large sum for their services.

The other marks of her station are her maid and the amount and number of possessions that surround her in the painting.
