Unbridled consumerism may lead to serious ecological problems. For example, the enormous demand for hamburgers caused deforestation. Moreover, consumerism is the cause of exploitation of the Third World by the developed countries as the latter ones require more and more resources to satisfy their appetites and have to seek them in the underdeveloped and developing nations.
