Research on AIDS indicates that there are individuals who may have different viral characteristics, such as high CD4 cell counts and suppressed viral load. The difference in viral characteristics is because of the host defense responses and environmental factors. Individuals with high CD4 cell counts and a low viral load should use medications to prevent the disease from progressing.

Some of the common clinical manifestations observed during the disease progression include Kaposi sarcoma, recurrent opportunistic infections, and wasting syndrome. The reason for the occurrence of such infections is because of the immune deficiencies characterized by AIDS infection.
