Zur proteins’ function in bacterial cells is to maintain zinc homeostasis. Being regulator proteins, Zur senses the depletion or surplus of zinc, an essential yet toxic transition metal in the same category as copper and manganese. Zur controls gene transcription by activating “putative zinc-export genes” or “putative zinc-uptake genes” depending on how far zinc content deviates from the level required for optimal cell functioning. They regulate genes responsible for zinc uptake (znuA) and export (zitB). According to Choi et al. (2017), Zur has a total of 172 bonding sites.
