The main function of a Poly(A) tail is to increase the stability of RNA molecules, particularly messenger RNA or mRNA. After mRNA is transcribed and matured after splicing, it needs to be stabilized from degradation on both ends, where the head is protected by the cap, and the tail is protected by the poly(A) tail. The latter is comprised of several adenosine monophosphates.
