Kocyła et al. examined classical zinc finger (ZnP), LIM domain (Zn2P), zinc hook (ZnP2), and zinc clasp (ZnP1 P2). These zinc protein domains differ structurally in that they have distinct Zn(II)-to-protein binding stoichiometries. While the first is the smallest protein structure binding to just one Zn(II) ion, the second one has a double zinc finger domain capable of binding to two Zn(II) ions. The last two are more complex and only differentiable in that the third comprises two identical polypeptide chains, whereas the fourth consists of two different protein chains. Together, they form a metaphoric finger, domain, hook, and clasp.
