The Spurt of Blood play by Artaud refers to the modern period of the twentieth century, to the era of surrealism, modernism, and manifesto. For Artaud, the Theatre of Cruelty is marked by the simultaneous presence of life and death with a note of irony; his play also represents the absolutism and the notes of an enigma in male-female relationships:
“Young man: I love you, and everything is beautiful.
A young girl (with a strong tremolo in her voice): you love me and everything is beautiful.”
The story, thus, is an outright manifestation of pain, where the agony of the body could not be compared with the mental illness of the mind. Another peculiar thing about his writing style is the revolutionary approach and contrasted analysis of the absolute dualities, such as life and death, spirit and flesh, emotion and reason. It should be stressed that this play also belongs to the theatre of cruelty, as the author combines cold madness with a realistic image of life.
