President Arthur had a favorable attitude towards Indians. Notably, at the time of his presidency, such views reigned in American society. People were inclined to treat Indians in a better way. The President was quite consistent and wished to return some lands to Indians. However, he did not manage to convince Congress to vote for such a policy. More so, the larger part of the lands had already been sold to Europeans. The President also suggested that Indians (individuals rather than tribes) had the right to own land. This idea was also quite unsuccessful. He created a Reservation for Native Americans. The President allocated certain funds to enable Indians to obtain the education, though the funds were insufficient. Clearly, the President tried to give more rights and liberties to Indians, and he wanted to return a small part of the land to Native Americans. However, the majority of those in power did not want to give away resources and give more liberties to Indians, who were still seen as savages by many.
