Pleiotropy is the concept of a single gene influencing multiple phenotypic traits in the organism, which can become visible as a resultof genetic mutation. It is possible for some genes to have singular, direct effects, but others might be responsible for multiple behaviors. Pleiotropy was first discovered by Gregor Mendel through his studies of pea plants, which led to many important discoveries in genetics. Some examples of pleiotropy include cystic fibrosis and albinism, in both of which genetic mutation is harnessed in a particular way. Pleiotropy is not always particularly harmful to the organism and can be extremely helpful for studying genes and their functions.
