ORF1b is an example of a non-structural gene, and it is responsible for the production of non-structural proteins by encoding the longer polypeptide 1b. Since the stop codon of ORF1a is immediately followed by a 1-ribosome frameshift, the longer polypeptide 1ab, which splits into 15 NSPS, continues to be translated by ORF1b.
