Today, New Yorkers are frustrated from being “Good Samaritans” by the turn of life. Some people do not want unsolicited help because they feel patronized, while others avoid external contact at all costs. In the olden days, they would help hitchhikers and feed hungry strangers. However, life in contemporary society has deprived them of this privilege. Their attitudes towards showing kindness to strangers were shaped by their experiences and the teachings offered during childhood. They were taught that interacting with strangers can be dangerous. Therefore, survival in New York demanded the avoidance of people whom one did not know.
