In my view, “history of now” means that forced labor is still practiced today, and every year millions of people become victims of slavery. To describe forced labor these days, the term “human trafficking” is used instead of the word “slavery. This concept should not be taken literally – as when some people are bought and sold by others.
It includes any exploitation of people and their search, transportation, transfer, and harboring to achieve that goal. In other words, human trafficking is not just kidnapping and taking people abroad, for example, for prostitution. Suppose a person borrowed money and could not pay it back, and the lender forces him to work off the debt by constantly raising the interest rate. In that case, this is also a form of modern slavery. Anyone can become a victim of human trafficking, but certain people are easier to involve in forced labor. This fact shows that historic slavery continues today, and we must do everything we can to eradicate it.
