What does bipolar, bitemperate, antitropical, tropical, and cosmopolitan distribution mean? What is an example of an extant species or genus with antitropical distribution? Plot its distribution on a map. Is there a mechanism for dispersal that may account for the distribution pattern observed?

There are three main types of species distribution in relation to zones which are the antitropical (bipolar or bitemperate) distribution, tropical distribution, and cosmopolitan distribution. Antitropical distribution is discussed when species are present in “temperate or polar environments in both the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres”, but these species are not observed or minimally found in tropical environments. Tropical distribution means the distribution of species across tropical regions in both the Hemispheres. Cosmopolitan distribution means the presence of species in different environments because of their wide distribution.

The distribution of great white sharks is associated with the antitropical bitemperate distribution, although great white sharks are also observed in near-tropical waters, as it is presented in Figure 1 (antitropical distribution is marked in red).

There are different mechanisms of distribution, and it is possible to discuss the distribution of great white sharks with references to the spatio-temporal pattern. According to this pattern, great white sharks are mainly observed in the warm waters between 30° and 50° latitudes in the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres. Following the example of great white sharks’ distribution, it is possible to state that the modern antitropical distribution pattern is associated with the distribution typical for the Permian Period on Earth.
