According to the biographies of Amelia Connolly Douglas and Marguerite Waddens, indigenous women were encouraged to marry fur traders to secure financial resources. These marriages were intended to promote trade between the woman’s relatives and the trader and provide mutual aid in times of need. This implied that by getting married to an Indigenous man, a non-Indigenous lady achieves prestige.

In a fur trade society, a European man who married an Aboriginal woman would acquire and enhance trade relations with Aboriginal men and safeguard the trade of the tribe to which the Aboriginal woman belonged. Aboriginal women also benefited from intermarriage during the fur trade due to the emergence of European technology. They enjoyed the luxuries of European goods and courtships by European men.
