John Locke was a famous philosopher who greatly contributed to the theories of liberal government. According to his empiricist theory, people utilize their experience to acquire ideas to examine them by comparing and getting knowledge. He also argues that government has obligations to the citizens and can have only limited power. Citizens can also dismiss the government under certain circumstances. This point of view was rather optimistic as it allowed citizens to select the authorities that would rule their society. Locke also supported the idea that every individual has a right to own property. It is noted that “the idea that property is justified by work holds out the promise of a meritocracy based on effort.” It guarantees equality between work and property. Still, it does not mean that everyone will have an equal amount of property. Thus, everyone deserves to own property, and its amount might vary depending on the efforts of the people at work. The property is used by people for enjoyment and continuation of life. Still, the philosopher did not consider the cases when the property was acquired in illegal ways. It is possible to say that the basic ideas of property and its acquisition still work today.
