Between the 1920s and early 1940s, alcohol consumption in the US was reduced by almost 50 percent. According to Blocker, by the end of 1929, deaths associated with cirrhosis had reduced to 10.7 per 100,000 individuals from 29.5 cases in 1911. Similarly, the number of people admitted into state mental hospitals due to alcoholic psychosis reduced significantly. Arrests due to disorderly conduct and drunkenness also went down during this period. Crime rates were also reduced following the ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol. However, bootlegging became popular during the prohibition, thus advancing the black market for alcoholic beverages. In the long-term, companies started shutting down following the ban, leading to unemployment. Nevertheless, the ban was repealed in 1933, but in some states, such as Mississippi, the ban remained in effect until 1966.
