The two religions became universal since conquest and missionary work facilitated diffusion. Christianity spread through the downfall of Rome, while Ashoka spread Buddhism. Besides that, both religions emerged in an effort aimed at reforming the religious systems they emanated from. Perhaps the most important factor that led to their universal system is their rise and transition from egalitarian small house churches that characterized the Jesus era into male-dominated hierarchical institutions. Moreover, both religions were embraced by many large states in their respective regions. Lastly, the strong link between the colonization of Africa and the Americas contributed to the rapid evolution of Christianity into a universal religion.
