What can the transmissions and impact of the bubonic plague tell us about life in medieval Europe and the continent’s connections to the rest of the world?

A

The transmission of the bubonic plague was supported mainly by the lack of hygiene in European cities. Many sources of infection such as fleas, rats, and cattle lived in urban areas, which left the majority of the population helpless to stop the spread of the disease (Bulliet et al., p. 339). The officials could not have done anything because they did not know what was causing the plague. Thus, their only choice was to close the gates to less infected regions in hopes to slow the process down. This lack of understanding shows that people of that time period did not possess enough knowledge of the medical world or problems related to polluted environments. The impact of the plague was significant. In many areas, more than a half of all people did not survive. The remaining ones sought religious reasons for their losses. The societal structure changed as well. Peasants demanded their freedom and many professionals revolted against price restrictions on goods (Bulliet et al., p. 341).
