There were three possible reasons that Matisse could have chosen to go to Tahiti. They were the stereotypical ideal of Tahiti that had been seen in works by other artists, the fact that Tahiti was currently a colony of France at the time he went, and lastly, the growing popularity of Oceanic art in Paris. He characterized his trip in terms of a personal quest that would allow him to increase the experiences that he had already had in his lifetime.
