What are the mythical reasons for the adoption of Orthodox Christianity by the Kievan state? Was Prince Vladimir a true believer or a political opportunist? (Can you compare him with Constantine, The Roman Emperor?) What were the implications of adapting Christianity from Constantinople rather than Rome?

There was a mythical belief that the founding father of the Orthodox Church, Apostle Andrew, had sojourned the areas north of the Black Sea and prophesied that a great Christian city would be established at the place where Kyiv stands today. Prince Vladimir of Kyiv was not a believer. He was a political opportunist who took advantage of the Christianization of Kyiv to achieve political ends. He also wanted to get into history as the founder of the Russian Orthodox Church. He is different from Constantine in that Constantine established the church through the apostolic ascent. The implications of adapting Christianity from Constantinople rather than Rome was that Rome was not comfortable with this outcome, and this led to the differences that caused the breakaway of the Russian orthodox from the Roman Catholic.
