Network administrators and designers should investigate the following issues:
- The network size – this is concerning the computers and people using the computers. The network designers should consider the size requirements provided by the company building the network. The size determines the type of network. For instance, a small location like a building would require a local area network, and a large company would need a campus area network.
- Functionality – the tasks that the network should perform must be considered in the design. A network that only provides sharing functionality would be much different from one that offers both sharing and collaborative business activities.
- Security – secure networks are what organizations strive to develop. In the design of a network, a network administrator should ensure that security considerations such as confidentiality, recovery, and identification are included in the network.
- The cost of implementing the network must be determined. The network designer should ensure that the organization can meet the required cost of implementing the network.
- Transmission media – this can be cables or wireless media. For wider coverage, wireless transmissions are reliable as compared to cabled networks.
