Cultural competence refers to a situation when behavior “…attitudes and policies come together in a system or social environment.” Some of the skills that play a critical part in cultural competency include the ability of individuals to accept the cultural differences of other people as well as the ability to demonstrate warmth, empathy reacting in a flexible manner to a wide variety of possible situations. One of the key pillars of cultural competency is the depth of knowledge that extends to the understanding of cultures, languages, and behavioral aspects of other peoples and the conflicts that may arise from the interaction of the diverse cultures. Another fundamental aspect of cultural competency is the mental attitude that different cultures and environments are likely to result in people who are different from others and that they should recognize and accept those differences as opposed to being opposed to them.
