The segmentation of movie audiences was based on the Hollywood standard known as “four-quadrant marketing.” The quadrants were as follows: men under 25, men over 25, women under 25, and women over 25. Sometimes a fifth quadrant was added, intended for viewers of a particular ethnicity, but in general, a four-quadrant approach became the basis of a feature film. Very rarely was a film made that did not appeal to at least two quadrants, and many of the most successful films of all time appealed to four quadrants.
