Police corruption is broadly defined as a form of misconduct by officers with the aim of receiving benefits or acquiring any other form of personal gain, besides the legal salary, in exchange for doing something. There are several types and forms of police corruption, which include bribes, gratuities, the “rotten apple” theory, and stages of moral decline. Moreover, there are grass-eaters who are not aggressive and usually take what is given, and the man-eaters who are mostly aggressive and usually look for bribes.
Law enforcers should be required to wear body cameras to ensure improvement in police accountability and reduce the levels of misconduct by these individuals. The body cameras will be able to deliver audio and visual evidence. This can be used to confirm events in an investigation that ensures transparency in the police departments and builds trust between law enforcement agencies and the citizens. In addition, the wearing of these gadgets reduces violence cases and improves police officers’ safety.
