What are the consequences of uncontrolled hypertension?

Hypertension has numerous negative impacts when left uncontrolled or untreated. Due to the high pressure of blood flow, arterial walls become narrower and less elastic, thereby less efficient. Hypertension may also cause an aneurysm, which refers to the localized bulging of an arterial wall. The condition can damage the heart, leading to coronary heart disease or heart failure. In the brain, high blood pressure could cause a stroke, cognitive impairment, and dementia. In extreme cases, hypertension results in memory problems, blindness, and renal failure.
