What are the cognitive distortions of the “imaginary audience” and the “personal fable”? First, define both types and next, offer a detailed, specific example of one of these types of egocentric thought, from your adolescence. Did these change over time for you? How?

The ability to reason about one’s reasoning is at the root of two forms of adolescent egocentrism. The first form is called imaginary audience because the adolescent begins to think that others are as critical or as admiring of him as he is. It is a result of cognitive confusion in subject-object relations.

The other form of adolescent egocentrism is called a personal fable. It is a cognitive distortion in which the adolescent has a strong feeling of uniqueness and utmost importance. Therefore, when the adolescent has some kind of intense feeling either of pain or joy, he is convinced that nobody has ever felt that way and nobody can understand that.
