In America, the marriage rate can be considered relatively high. Currently, it is around seven per 1,000 total population, while the divorce rate is almost three by 1,000 individuals. It means that around half of all married couples living in the U.S. divorce. The primary causes of divorce are basic incompatibility, infidelity, and financial problems. Notably, only about 5% of individuals name physical or emotional abuse as the primary cause of their divorce, while addiction of one of the partners accounts for less than 1% of all cases. These findings relate to the social exchange theory, showing that when the costs of relationships outweigh the benefits, people tend to leave their partners.
