When the widespread economic depression hit America in the late 19th century, Chinese nationals faced discrimination, and the situation grew worse. Despite the treaty protecting the rights of Chinese citizens, the political class and the labor movements discriminated against Chinese immigrants and called them cheap laborers. During this time, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which virtually barred all Chinese nationals from entering the US.

Some of these racist policies undermined the basic human rights that should be advocated by all people. However, in 1943, Congress repealed this Exclusion Act after China and America united during World War 2, although the Chinese immigration department was limited to only 105 people per year. In 1965, the US government removed all the restrictions, and Chinese nationals got the leeway to visit the US freely. Currently, over 100,000 Chinese people are working and living in New York.
