Patient safety and the quality of care continue to be among the critical concerns of managers working in various healthcare settings. The theory of the clinical microsystem seeks to offer a conceptual view of how clinical units function, thus allegedly providing strategies for care improvement. However, in reality, this conceptual theory is rather simplistic and conflicts with everyday practice because it does not explain some factors influencing care and its outcomes. For instance, Nelson et al. note that the theory does not reflect that work in clinical units is often organized by professional disciplines and specialties. Thus, the application of the theory does not account for difficulties in interprofessional practice and fails to offer solutions to them. Additionally, there are some factors in clinical units that prevent them from applying microsystem safety principles correctly. For instance, the policy of full disclosure advised by Mohr et al. may not be fully applicable due to problems in accountability and fears of legal action.
