In general, “rites of passage” refer to various ceremonial events held in different historical societies to mark the transition from one social or rather religious status to another. In the African culture, rites of passage were held in high esteem and great significance, such that it was an abomination for any particular member of the community to skip any particular rite of passage. The five common rites of passage in the African culture include birth, adulthood, marriage, eldership, and ancestorship. These rites of passage were performed in accordance with prescribed social rules and norms. For instance, initiation into adulthood was marked by acts such as circumcision at the onset of puberty, it was marked by special ceremonies and teachings meant to guide the initiates in their adult life.
