Alleles are variations of genes, the chromosome sequences that determine a person’s characteristics. Since humans are “diploid organisms”, meaning at each genetic locus there are two alleles (“allele,” n.d.), genetic information from each one of the two parents is inherited. Therefore, the resultant genotype can be either homozygous or heterozygous, depending on whether the two alleles in the pair are the same or different. The expression of a particular phenotype depends on whether the alleles in question are dominant or recessive, and on their combination.
