Frankly speaking, I was always more into fictional stories than autobiographical ones. However, after reading some books from our course, including Henry Box Brown’s “Narrative” and Harriet Jacob’s “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” I start to see their appeal and value. The books mentioned above invoked much more empathy toward enslaved Black people than history textbooks or any fictional stories that touch upon this topic.

It is easier to be indifferent toward a nameless mass of people or fictional characters. Nevertheless, once you read how Jacob naturally refers to herself and other slaves as “merchandise” which can be “purchased” and “sold,” you cannot help but sympathize with them and feel involved. I felt the same while reading Henry Box Brown’s reflection on how he “became their (white Americans) own property.” It is horrible to realize that some people could literally be treated as inanimate objects.
