The main concern that Riley’s parents have regarding his future challenges stems from the grim statistics that are associated with transgender children. Studies show that 41% of transgender children commit suicide because of depression. Although they provide their child with the tender loving care that he needs, their greatest worry is that the society he will interact with in his life might not do the same. There are several reports of children of Riley’s kind who have fallen victims to constant teasing and mocking at school or within the neighborhood every day. Being subjected to such can lead Riley into depression, which is a leading cause of suicide among this population.

As he grows up, one of the gender genes will become more dominant in him than the other. If the female genes are more outstanding than the male’s genes, then many things will need to change in his life, including his voice, physique, attires, and choice of schools to go to. I am concerned that he will get into a lot of trouble or difficulties trying to fit in with either of the genders. Boys might want to dissociate themselves from him, maybe because he will have boobs. On the other hand, girls would steer clear of his paths, perhaps because he would be donning beards. This will definitely affect his academic performance and even participation in sports. For instance, if he is interested in playing basketball in the future, he will encounter difficulties deciding whether to join the male or female teams.
