For Genie’s case, a child protection notification would be needed. There are reasonable grounds to accord her protection from the government because Genie’s past is marred with mistreatment and abuse, especially from her parents. One type of suffering that she underwent was isolation. Genie’s bedroom was at the back of her parent’s house, where she spent her nights locked in bed while days were spent strapped to a potty chair.
Her isolation was further compounded by the fact that her bedroom was not properly lit. Bedroom windows were covered to about three inches from the top, thereby permitting little light to her room. The child protection notification is also important to Genie because her parent is not likely to protect her from any harm. With her mother’s blindness due to a cataract, the mother was incapacitated to care for and protect her from any form of abuse. In essence, child protection notification would be critical for Genie to ensure that she would not suffer the same fate as she did in her childhood.
