Wanda Jackson’s lack of commercial success in the 1950s was not a function of gender only. Rather, she presented her image as a sexually aggressive artist with excessively ‘sexual appeal’ to her then the conservative male audience. Her dressing betrayed the family values in the then society. Women still have to contend to a cultural double standard with respect to aggressive sexuality to appeal to the modern male audiences who have aligned women’s sexual appeal to their music. This paradigm shift in perception of men towards female artists must have inspired Miley Cyrus to surprisingly tweak vigorously. Unlike in the time of Wanda Jackson, the majority of the male audience has embraced aggressive sexuality among female artists as a form of entertainment in their musical composition.
