Wakako Yamauchi’s And the Soul Shall Dance is written as a social document like Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. The play is a realistic memory play that centers around two Immigrant families who are dealing with depression and the challenges of adapting to American life without giving up their Japanese traditions. How can you describe characters with a focus on Japanese traditions, family relationships, cultural and social expectations, and gender issues?

The drama depicts the life of the two Japanese families of immigrants. It describes the relations between the Issei and Nissei. These two families live in severe conditions. Their houses and living facilities are rather poor. These two families have left their motherland in search of a better life.

The main characters of the drama are Mr. Murata and his wife Hana. Mr. Murata may be characterized as a good father with a positive and optimistic view of life. His wife Hana is a pragmatic and sober-minded person. She is eager to return home, but she understands their poor financial situation.

Their daughter Masaco is the representative of another generation and her values to a certain degree change from that of her parents. This fact sometimes disturbs Murata and Hana.

The neighboring family of Mr.Oka and his wife Emiko, who is the sister of Okas first wife. Both of them are not satisfied with their marriage and are unhappy with it. Kiyoko is Okas daughter from the first marriage. In comparison with Masaco, Kiyoko has just arrived from Japan. She is the representative of the Japan culture and values.

Mr. Murato and his wife Hana, as well as their daughter Masaco, seem to be satisfied with their new surroundings. In contrast with this rather united family, there is a drama of the Oka family. The shotgun marriage irritates Oka, as well as his wife Emiko. Emiko was forced to leave her beloved in Japan and to marry Oka. The situation worsens when Okas daughter from his first wedlock arrives from Japan.

Emikos burning desire is to come back to her beloved, while Oka is willing to bring up his daughter Kiyoko as an American child. With Kiyokos arrival, Emiko feels even more lonely and miserable than before. Her depression is deepened by the fact of Okas indifference towards her. She has nobody to speak with and to rely on. Unable to extricate, she dances, imagining that she is not in California but in Japan.
