Vertebrates and some invertebrates have a closed circulatory system. Explain the advantage of having a closed circulatory system over an open circulatory system.

In an open circulatory system, the heart pumps blood directly into the hemocoel, which then flows directly into an interconnected system of sinuses that are in touch with the tissues. This system allows direct transfer of oxygen ad nutrients to the tissues. In the closed circulatory system, blood is delivered through arteries, veins, and capillaries. Advantages of a closed circulatory system over an open circulatory system include: it allows the separation of functions; the pressure built within the closed system allows blood to reach all the extremities with ease; the system facilitates a quick change in the velocity of the blood therefore increasing or decreasing metabolic processes faster; finally, it allows for ultrafiltration.
