Use counterexamples to test the following general moral principle: Making a promise to someone incurs a moral obligation to keep the promise in all circumstances.

The obligation to keep a promise can be violated in the situation when it violates one’s personal code of ethics and that of the society he or she lives in. For example, if a person promised his friend to help him with some task, but the circumstances changed, the promise can be delayed or canceled. For example, critical work-related stress or family issues can be noted as the most common factors.
