Under what circumstances might classical and operant conditioning be employed to change behavior and why? Describe how contingency contracts (also known as behavioral contracts) can be used in the classroom to increase desired behavior and decrease undesired behavior. Under what conditions would an instructor use which reinforcement schedule? Are there situations when the schedule might change? Give reasons for your answer.

Contingency, or behavioral, contracts are a method to allow a child or adolescent more freedom in exchange for imposing specific restrictions on their behaviors and having consequences for following or not following them. Such outcomes can be both positive, such as rewards for meeting particular goals, and negative, in the form of punishments for breaking the rules. As such, an educator can use contingency contracts to teach children about responsibility and to encourage the prevalence of desirable behaviors over problematic ones. However, the rules should not be excessively harsh or difficult to follow, as children may become frustrated and refuse to abide by the agreement altogether.

There are generally two reinforcement approaches available to an instructor: classical and operant conditioning. According to Neck, Houghton, and Murray, the former incorporates the use of specific stimuli to promote desired behaviors while the latter depends on the associations between actions and outcomes. Operant conditioning uses reinforcement schedules, which determine how often behavior-promoting actions will occur. An educator may use reinforcement more often in the early stages of teaching a response and reduce the frequency once it has been internalized by the students. Once a child learns a behavior, the outcome does not have to manifest every time, but occasional reminders are still beneficial to refresh the motivation for following it.
