Twain fills his novel Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn with examples of human corruption and cruelty. Choose two specific examples of this corruption or cruelty and describe them.

The cruelest character in the book is Huck’s father, who regularly beats and finally kidnaps him. Being drunk, he even tried to kill his son. This is wildly outrageous as Huck is a child who depends on his parents. When his father turns against him, Huck has nowhere to go and no one to protect him. The most striking example of corruption was on the part of Duke and Dauphin, whom Huck and Jim took on the raft. They sold Jim to a farmer, even though Jim and Huck helped them. These examples reflect a broader culture of disregarding human feelings to satisfy one’s own immediate needs, selfishness, and calculation. It is easy for slavery to survive when people think only about themselves since money considerations get the upper hand over human feelings.
