Deviant behavior refers to such behavior of an individual or a group that fails to conform to the accepted social norms or expectations. For instance, that includes regular lateness to work, alcohol and/or drug abuse, sexual harassment, and murder, to name a few. As can be noticed, deviant behavior entails a spectrum of actions from mild misconduct to serious crimes.

Socialization is the most powerful system of social control because people not only comply with the norms of the referent group but also internalize them. In other words, individuals almost unconditionally agree with all the rules and traditions of the society they live in. In contrast, consider legal norms that people usually comply with but quite often may not internalize.

I think ‘high values’ should be protected from deviant behavior as it directly threatens the group’s homeostasis (stability), which is usually associated with the community’s most optimal survival strategy. Indeed, societies need quite a long time to form the rules of interaction that would bring more benefits to their members than losses. In this regard, deviant behavior can bring elements that would seriously undermine the overall well-being of the community.

For instance, imagine that some society would change the value that all people have equal rights to life and happiness to the norm that postulates ‘survival of the strongest.’ It is not difficult to guess that such a society would shortly be in chaos.
