Quantitative and qualitative methods provide similar data but are effective for different purposes. The qualitative method allows more specificity in the observations, like the description of particular interactions between animals. While such details can be helpful, they also introduce the possibility of bias, which is absent in the quantitative method. Additionally, the quantitative results can be used in an automated statistical analysis or other types of calculations as soon as they are completed. The results of the qualitative method can only be assessed and analyzed manually.

At first glance, qualitative observations seem to be an easier method, as one only has to make notes in chronological order. However, after one becomes familiar with the table for the quantitative method, it does not take much time to find a suitable cell, and making notes becomes faster than in the qualitative method. In sum, the two methods provide different types of data, and the choice of the method should be informed by the context of the respective study, its goals, and other approaches involved.
