A melody is a sequence of notes played in a way that is memorable and can be recognized as a separate unit. For instance, when we hum a song such as lullabies (without uttering words), we vocalize the pitches of the melody. Pitches have to be definite to have a melody contrary to indefinite such as drums.

There are the highest and lowest pitches within a melody depending on the range of the melody, either small or large. Most of the time, vocal melodies have a smaller range than those melodies written to be played by an instrument. An instrument, for instance, the piano, can accommodate melodies with a larger scale of pitches.

Vocal Melody

The vocal melody is often associated with a text which is the primary force building such melodies. A line of text usually brings the melody to mind. Vocal melody styles vary from simple songs usually referred to as conjunct to more complex melodies, characterized by operatic singing and often disjunct.

Instrumental Melody

The absence of text in instrumental melodies differentiates them from vocal melodies. Although an instrument can play a vocal melody, there is part of melodies purely instrumental from the origin, and these melodies are mostly made to take advantage of their uniqueness. Many instruments have a larger scale of pitches than the voice and hence have complicated rhythmic patterns.

In conclusion, vocal melodies are easily memorable in mind depending on their complexity. A vocal melody may start in simple folk and change its complexity as it is narrated. On the other hand, instrumental melodies have a wide range of pitches than voices and are easy to navigate. Instrumentals can also play vocal melodies.
