The concept of “nation” creates a sense of identity and uniqueness hence influencing people to create, understand and respond to pop songs. Artists tend to create songs that reaffirm (but in some cases challenge) their culture and identity. Although the nature of the competition is not primarily a music competition, the competing nations endeavor to promote their sense of identity, reality, and culture.

The variation in performances during Eurovision reflects each nation’s different beliefs and identity. Despite how well the presentations are, it seems that the main determining factor in how the countries votes are their concepts of national identity. The “douze” points are given based on geographical location, indicating that voting is based on shared geographical identity.

I believe that a platform like Eurovision can change a nation’s sense of identity because of its competitiveness and interactions. In competition, in most cases, winners are admired and others may be influenced to behave like them. If the US were to participate in Eurovision, I think Madonna would represent the country because she is, to some extent, the epitome of freedom and liberation, concepts that the country believe in.
