“Coco” contains many aspects that highlight the principles of Latin American culture. The film reveals Mexican cultural characteristics about death. From “Coco,” the viewer learns that the Mexicans, unlike many other cultures, including the American one, have an unusually positive attitude towards death. Thus, a Mexican holiday is shown when the entire population goes to the cemeteries, decorates the graves with flowers and candles, prepares the favorite food of the dead, sculpts sugar skulls, and honors other traditions.

Ugwu notes that Mexican cultural traditions are carefully transferred and reflected in the film. The film also contains a scene where Miguel’s family builds an altar in honor of their deceased family members, decorating it with their photographs and stacking offerings such as candles and marigolds.

Moreover, the film features several alebrijes, including a flying dog and a winged jaguar, which are colorful sculptures depicting fantastical creatures born in Mexican folk traditions. Notably, Miguel Dante’s companion animal, the Mexican hairless dog, is also a symbol of Mexican culture. Thus, “Coco” accurately and reverently depicts the peculiarities of Hispanic culture and allows the viewer to learn more about it. As for me, I was familiar with some details of Mexican culture. However, aspects such as the importance of marigolds and alebrijes were new to me.

“Coco” defies the Good Neighbor Policy ideas of the 1940s and 50s, as the film presents an accurate Hispanic perspective instead of showing the picture from the point of view of any white character. Moreover, the cast consists entirely of actors of Hispanic origin. It is noteworthy that the film was released during the presidency of Trump, who, as you know, advocated the construction of a wall between the border of Mexico and the United States to control migration.
